Free EXIF Remover Online
Every photo you take stores far more than the image itself. Camera model, lens aperture, shutter speed, timestamp โ and, most critically, the exact GPS coordinates where the shot was taken. An EXIF remover strips that hidden layer before you share, protecting your home address, daily routes, and personal devices from anyone who receives the file.

What Gets Removed
PrivacyStrip targets every EXIF field that can expose personal information. When you run a file through the cleaner, the following metadata is permanently stripped:
- GPS coordinates โ latitude, longitude, altitude, and direction of travel
- Camera model & serial number โ manufacturer, model name, and unique device identifier
- Date and time stamps โ original capture time, digitization time, and time-zone offset
- Exposure settings โ aperture, ISO, shutter speed, focal length, flash status
- Software & OS version โ editing app name and version used to process the image
- Author and copyright fields โ creator name, contact info, rights statement
- Thumbnail previews โ embedded low-resolution copy sometimes retaining older GPS data
- User comments and descriptions โ freeform text fields added by apps
How It Works
The entire EXIF removal process takes under ten seconds and never touches a remote server:
- 1 Upload your file โ drag and drop a photo (or batch of photos) onto the tool, or click to browse. Files load directly into browser memory.
- 2 Scan metadata โ click "Scan Files" to see a full list of EXIF fields detected in each image, including GPS coordinates mapped to a location preview.
- 3 Strip all metadata โ click "Strip All Metadata". ExifReader and piexifjs rewrite the JPEG/PNG binary in-browser, zeroing out every metadata block while preserving image quality.
- 4 Download clean files โ save the scrubbed copy to your device. Your original remains untouched; only the downloaded version has metadata removed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does removing EXIF data affect image quality?
No. EXIF data is stored separately from the actual pixel data. Stripping it leaves the image dimensions, color depth, and visual quality completely intact. The only difference is file size โ cleaned files are typically a few kilobytes smaller.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
Never. PrivacyStrip runs entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Files are read into local browser memory, processed there, and written back to a download โ nothing passes over the network to any server.
Does social media strip EXIF data automatically?
Most platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter) recompress images on upload, which removes many EXIF fields as a side effect. However, the stripping is inconsistent and platform-specific โ some retain GPS in certain upload paths. Removing EXIF before sharing is the only reliable guarantee.
Can I remove EXIF from iPhone HEIC photos?
Yes. PrivacyStrip supports HEIC files exported from iPhone. iOS stores location, device, and timestamp data in HEIC files the same way as JPEG. For a full walkthrough, see the iPhone EXIF removal guide.
